Reproductive Epidemiology Training Program

Training Program Overview

Brian Strom, MD, MPH, as Director, and Kurt Barnhart, MD, MSCE, as Co-Director, manage this two- to three-year training program, which is designed to prepare clinicians who have completed their clinical training in a relevant medical specialty (e.g., Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Adolescent Medicine, or Urology) for academic careers as independent clinical investigators capable of integrating the methods and skills of clinical epidemiology in reproductive medicine. The program consists of required courses in clinical epidemiology, research methodology, and biostatistics; a required course in reproductive epidemiology; elective courses in advanced methods for epidemiology and biostatistics; extensive independent readings and attendance at research seminars at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; plus the completion of an independent research project. Trainees are expected to matriculate in the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology degree program.

Background and History

Training in reproductive epidemiology has been provided by the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) since 1993. This program, now managed collaboratively by the CCEB and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has provided this training with funding from the National Institute of Child and Human Development since 1996. Fellowships are available annually.

Research

The CCEB, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Center for Research in Reproduction and Women's Health, and the Reproductive Research Unit are the primary entities within Penn engaged in clinical epidemiology and research in reproductive and women’s health. Superb resources are available.
