Undergraduate Medical Education Courses
CCEB/DBE faculty provide direction and leadership for Module I and Module III courses taught to medical students.- Epidemiology and Biostatistics
This is a Module 1, first semester course that provides an introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics for first year medical students. The focus is on basic concepts that support critical appraisal of medical literature. The course includes lectures and small group workshops and is taught by a large number of CCEB/DBE faculty. Joshua Metlay, MD, PhD directs this course. - Clinical Decision Making
This is a Module 3 course that runs in the spring semester of the first year. The course builds on the basic introduction course and emphasizes skills in medical literature searching and evaluation and the application of this information to complex medical decisions. The course includes lectures and small groups and is directed by Kendal Williams, MD.
Undergraduate Medical Education Research Programs
The CCEB/DBE sponsors a series of research experiences available to medical students.- Summer Research Fellowship
This is a program open to Penn medical students completing their first year. Support is provided for two months of research with a CCEB/DBE faculty member, emphasizing hands on experience in data collection and analysis. This is a year-long program open to any medical student, typically taking a year off between years three and four of medical school. This national program provides support for a full year of clinical research and research training. - Paul Stolley Travel Fellowship
The CCEB/DBE sponsors the Paul D. Stolley Travel Award. This award, named for the Founding Director of the Clinical Epidemiology Unit, which preceded the CCEB, provides opportunities for medical students to study clinical epidemiology in an international setting.
