Dr. Leonard is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Nephrology at the Childrenís Hospital of Philadelphia, and a Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. She has established a multidisciplinary research program in clinical bone disease in children and adults. Her research program is focused on (1) the accurate assessment and diagnosis of osteoporosis in children with chronic disease, (2) the detrimental effects of glucocorticoid therapy, muscle deficits and inflammation on bone development in varied pediatric disorders, (3) the assessment of the unique effects of kidney disease, dialysis and transplantation on skeletal structure in children and adults using novel micro-imaging techniques, (4) the effects of vitamin D deficiency on physical functioning and cardiovascular disease in adults with chronic kidney disease, and (5) the evaluation of biomechanical interventions as potential anabolic bone therapies in patients with chronic disease.
Dr. Leonardís research program is supported by multiple NIH investigator-initiated grants, including 3 R01s,and an NIDDK K24 mid-career award. Most recently, she was awarded a grant to conduct a randomized clinical trial of low magnitude mechanical stimuli as an anabolic bone therapy in children with Crohn disease. She also serves as the primary mentor for multiple junior faculty and fellows that are supported by Foundation grants and NIH K awards. Overall, her program has catalyzed interactions among nephrology, nutrition, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology, radiology, statistics and epidemiology.
