Research Statement
Jason D. Christie, M.D., M.S. is the Section Chief of Medical Critical Care. He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and the Director of Clinical Research in the Pulmonary Division. His career is focused on translational research studies of the risks, pathogenesis, treatment, and outcomes of acute lung injury (ALI) in the transplant and non-transplant human populations.
Currently, Dr. Christie has extramural funding to support active research on somatic genetic variation, gene expression, and protein biomarkers in the etiology and pathogenesis of acute lung injury in the transplant, sepsis, and trauma populations. His research brings together clinicians, basic scientists, epidemiologists, and statisticians to build multidisciplinary studies of acute lung injury research.
Dr. Christie is the founder of the lung transplant outcomes group (LTOG), which is a multicentered cohort study the etiology and pathogenesis of acute lung injury following lung transplantation (termed primary graft dysfunction). His research focuses on the role of oxidative stress, coagulation/fibrinolysis, inflammatory and innate immune pathways in primary graft dysfunction. This line of research is funded by three R01 grants from NHLBI, one focusing on genetic risks, and a second focusing on plasma protein biomarkers as risk factors for primary graft dysfunction. The third R01 is in close collaboration with Dr. David Wilkes, and focuses on the role of autoimmunity to type V collagen in primary graft dysfunction pathogenesis. In addition, he is a project leader in the Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation consortium, funded through NIH. The goals of this project are to test the association between inflammatory gene mRNA expression in the donor and acute lung injury following the lung transplantation, as well as link early mRNA profiles with acute rejection occurring during the first year. Furthermore, Dr. Christie is the Associate Medical Director of the UNOS/ISHLT lung transplant registry, and primarily authors the registry report each year.
Dr. Christie is a project leader on a program project grant (Aron Fisher, PI) investigating genetic risks for ALI following trauma. He recently formed a multicenter collaboration, called the Trauma ALI SNP Consortium (TASC) to perform genome wide genetic association studies of ALI risk and outcomes. In addition, through the ARDSnet, he is currently conducting an ancillary study evaluating the long-term cognitive and neurological outcomes following ALI/ARDS.
