Penn Researchers Call for Changes to Organ Transplant Informed Consent

Scott Halpern, MD, PhD, MBE, Instructor in Medicine and Epidemiology, and a fellow in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care, and Arthur Caplan, PhD, director of the Center for Bioethics, are quoted in an MSNBC story about their piece in the June 26th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that recommends changes to the way in which potential organ transplant recipients are informed of the risks associated with organs from certain types of donors, such as those from people at risk of infectious diseases including HIV, or those with diabetes or high blood pressure. Abraham Shaked, MD, PhD, chief of the Division of Transplantation Surgery, is also a co-author on the article.
