Study Backs Psoriasis, Metabolic Link

JUNE 2, 2011

In continuing coverage, Dermatology Times reports that results of a new study suggest that severe psoriasis doubles the likelihood of metabolic syndrome, and that the prevalence of each syndrome component -- including obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and elevated glucose -- increases with severity of the skin disease. Joel Gelfand, MD, MSCE, assistant professor of Dermatology and associate scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, notes, "I think it's remarkable how many scientific papers have come out at this meeting looking at psoriasis and cardiovascular disease, metabolic comorbidities … linking psoriasis to these outcomes in some direct manner."
