Insidious ARDS

FEBRUARY 29, 2012

Few people outside the medical world have heard of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), even though it kills more Americans than breast cancer and often leaves survivors in various stages of disability. It kills upwards of 50,000 people in the US each year, more than breast cancer. The Pennsylvania Gazette reports that Penn physicians and researchers are working hard to blunt its impact. John Hansen-Flaschen, MD, chief, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical-Care Division; Jason Christie, MD, associate professor of Medicine and Epidemiology; Barry Fuchs, MD, associate professor of Medicine,; Paul Lanken, MD, professor of Medicine; Nuala Meyer, MD, assistant professor of Medicine; and Joanna Hart, MD, pulmonary and critical-care fellow are all featured experts in the article.
