Emotional Intelligence

Childre, D., and Rozman, D., (2002). Overcoming Emotional Chaos.  San Diego: Jodere Group.

Based on extensive research on the effects of mental and emotional stress on the heart, this book provides a practical approach to dealing with negative feelings and reducing stress. The authors discuss why our bodies respond to our feelings even if our mind tries not to pay attention. They also show that althought it often feels like we can't control our emotional reactions, there are tools that enable us to "cut through" to the heart of the matter. Included are lots of ideas and exercises to deal with fatigue, anxiety, relationships, and the workplace.

Damasio, A., (1999).  The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness.  New York: Harcourt Brace and Company.

A beautifully written and complexly woven scientific inquiry into the neurobiological foundations of the self. Read if you want to explore research on the emotions and body deeply and poetically.  As Damasio explains, consciousness begins as a felling.  He explores the mystery of how e know that we know. We don't yet know what feelings are made of or what are they the perception of. But we do know that the drama of the human condition comes from consciousness and the circle of influence-existence, consciousness, and creativity.  The generation of new ideas require mor than consciousness: fact, skill, memory, reasoning ability, and languate. However, at the core, the way we know life is through consciousness.

His book Descartes' Error (New York: Putnam, 1994) is a treatise on the critical role of emotions in decision-making and the physiologic origins of "gut feelings."

Goleman, D., Boyatzis, R., and McKee, A., (2002). Primal Leadership.  Boston: Harvard Business School Press).

Read anything by daniel Goleman. This book makes the business case for Emotional Intelligence and is most relevant to leadership and organizational change. Has extensive notes on research. Lots of accessible examples, including health care.

Lewis, T., M.D., Armini, F., M.D., and Lannon, R., M.D., (2000).  A General Theory of Love.  New York: Vintage Books.

The title may not be what you expect. It is a rich rigorous book explaining the scientific basis for our relationships, written with literary eloquence. If you have ever thought it doesn't matter that much whom you spend time with, think again.  These authors trace the impact on our nervous system of people close to us, determining our mood, health, and structure of our brains. Great explanations of our limbic system and emotions.

Marai, S., (2001) Embers. New York: Vintage Books.

A masterful novel that demonstrates the resonance of love, the pain of betrayal, and the complexity of friendship. An old man reflects on his life, confronting his once closest friend, revealing his initial lack of emotional intelligence and his journey to discern what is true in his intimate relationships.

Remen, R.N., M.D., (2000).  My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging.  New York: Riverhead Books.

A lovely description of real experiences working with patients and colleagues, sharing their meaning and lessons by a wise oncologist.  Good to read when you've can't remember or feel the reason for  your commitment to serve and are willing to be touched, inspired, and reconnected to your emotional intelligence.

Seligman, M., (2002).  Authentic Happiness. New York: Free Press.

A component of Emotional intelligence is the capacity for optimism. Seligman's long tradition of psychological research is made accessible in this book. He demonstrates the importance of positive emotion and using our "signature strengths" to benefit our health, relationships, and careers. This work has spawned a coaching program and newsletter on-line. (http://www.authentichappiness.org/Book.html
