Gastrointestinal Epidemiology
Program Description
The CCEB is home to a program of education and research in the field of gastrointestinal epidemiology. The educational program includes adult and pediatric fellows in gastroenterology who are enrolled either in the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology degree program or the Clinical Research Certificate Program. In addition to the standard clinical epidemiology curriculum, an advanced course in gastrointestinal epidemiology methods and content is also offered.
The gastrointestinal epidemiology research program at Penn studies a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. We have a particularly strong focus on inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, acid peptic disorders, and medication safety. To conduct this research, faculty employ a wide range of methods, including the use of existing databases, ad hoc case-control studies, randomized clinical trials, meta-analysis, and decision modeling. Currently, the GI epidemiology research program is supported through several NIH R01 grants, a NIH K08 grant, several foundation grants, and several grants from pharmaceutical companies. The investigators listed below participate in this program.
