BIO STATEMENT

Ram Kumar Ghimire, MD, DMRD, MSc
Dr. Ram Kumar Ghimire is a senior radiologist and academic leader with more than three decades of experience in medical education, clinical radiology, and research in Nepal. His career has been deeply rooted in strengthening diagnostic capacity in resource-constrained settings and advancing equitable access to quality imaging services—an essential yet often underrecognized pillar of global health.
Dr. Ghimire completed his MD with Honors from L’vov State Medical Institute, Ukraine, followed by postgraduate specialization in Radiodiagnosis and a research-based MSc in Diagnostic Radiology from Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal. He served the Institute of Medicine, TU, for nearly four decades, rising from Assistant Instructor to Professor of Radiology and Head of Department (2011–2017). He currently leads the Department of Radiology at Nepal Mediciti Hospital as Head of Department and Principal Consultant.

His interest in global health stems from the recognition that accurate and timely diagnosis is fundamental to reducing morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Nepal and similar low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), limited access to imaging contributes significantly to delayed diagnoses in maternal health, infectious diseases, oncology, cardiovascular disease, and trauma. Dr. Ghimire’s work has focused on addressing these gaps through training, research, guideline development, and international collaboration.

He has contributed to capacity building by mentoring generations of radiologists, coordinating the MD Radiodiagnosis program, and serving on institutional academic councils and review boards. His research portfolio includes publications in obstetric imaging, pediatric pneumonia, encephalitis, high-altitude cerebral edema, breast cancer imaging, vascular interventions, and COVID-19 imaging—many addressing health challenges relevant to LMIC populations. His collaborative work with international investigators, including studies published in The Lancet Global Health and JACC Cardiovascular Imaging, reflects his commitment to cross-border partnerships in advancing diagnostic science.
Dr. Ghimire has actively engaged in regional and international professional forums, including leadership roles in the Nepal Radiologists’ Association and chairmanship of the Nepalese Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. His lectures at global conferences have highlighted emergency radiology, interventional procedures in resource-constrained settings, and the status of radiology services in emerging countries.

Through clinical leadership, research, policy engagement, and education, Dr. Ghimire continues to advocate for strengthening imaging systems as an integral component of universal health coverage. His work sits at the intersection of academic medicine, health systems development, and global collaboration—advancing the role of radiology in improving health outcomes both in Nepal and globally.
